A multiple entry Schengen visa holder is allowed to leave and return the region for multiple times within 180-day time period, however the combined stay in the region should not exceed a total of 90 days. Schengen visa needs to be applied if the citizen of a country is subject to the visa requirements.

Upon receiving a Schengen visa, a person is allowed to enter and travel anywhere in the Schengen region. Abolition of internal check points, internal border controls and very few number of stops or checks makes it very convenient to travel in the Schengen region.

Train, road and internal air travel are all considered as domestic trips which are equivalent to travelling between various across states in the US. Because of the Schengen visa, inter Europe travel has been simplified because of the ease of unified visa arrangement. In the schengen agreement, checks are made random mostly without passport checks or in the real suspicious cases.

A Schengen Visa can be obtained between 10 to 30 days (working). This is for short term stays. For the long stay resident permits or employment visas, the processing time may go up to several months.
